For teaching ESL in Australia, a strong knowledge of slang and colloquial is preferable as an important element of communicative skills, given the original nature of the Australian language, because it is difficult to communicate with Australians, unless one has some grasp of the idioms and colloquialisms that make the language so colourful. Not only is culture an aspect of communicative competence, it is the underlying dimension of what one knows and does. 'A language is what native speakers say, not what someone thinks they ought to say'.
